Special one-time payment

Dear Colleagues,

Many of you have expressed concerns about the current inflationary environment and the additional stress and financial pressures it is causing. To help address these challenges, the Institute will provide a special one-time, lump-sum payment of $1,500 to benefits-eligible staff and faculty, as well as postdoctoral associates and fellows, hired on or before September 1, 2022. This is the second consecutive year in which MIT has supplemented merit-based increases with additional payments to employees and postdoctoral fellows. The Institute will fully fund these special one-time payments from central resources.

To receive this payment, an employee must have an active appointment on December 1, 2022. These payments will then be included in paychecks on December 9, 2022 (for hourly paid employees) or December 15, 2022 (for semimonthly paid employees). Like other wage payments, they will be subject to federal and state tax.

Please be mindful that some members of our community – such as unionized staff, research fellows, and Lincoln Laboratory staff – follow different processes and are not eligible for this special payment. Unionized staff should contact their local representative with questions; others should contact their local HR administrator, human resources officer, or compensation specialist.

Sincerely,

Ramona Allen
