To Members of the MIT Community:

In February, President Reif asked us to lead the Institute-wide Task Force on the Future of MIT Education, and this morning the Task Force held its opening session. Given the immensity of the charge – to help reinvent the residential university of the future – it is vital that we draw upon the experience, expertise, creativity and aspirations of the entire MIT community.

As a starting point, today we are launching the Task Force website and Idea Bank. President Reif asked that we be bold in imagining the future of MIT education, so we hope you will consider these questions and join the conversation.

  • Are in-person lectures a thing of the past?
  • What does the classroom of 2020 look like?
  • Should we rethink the 4-year system of residential education?

Log on to learn about the Task Force and submit an idea! See what others are saying. Offer comments and ratings, share a document, and participate in the discussion.

In the coming months, we also plan to host informal gatherings to open the conversation across the community. Visit the Task Force website for updates.

We look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,

Sanjay Sarma
Director of Digital Learning

Israel Ruiz
Executive Vice President and Treasurer
