HUBweek—Participate in "A Festival for the Future”!

October 02, 2017

To the members of the MIT community,

We write to bring your attention to the variety of opportunities being presented by the upcoming “Festival of the Future,” HUBweek. Founded by MIT, The Boston Globe, Harvard University, and the Massachusetts General Hospital, this greater Boston collaboration explores the future at the intersections of art, science, and technology.

Now in its third year, HUBweek will take place from October 10 through 15, with activities at Boston’s City Hall Plaza—the newly created HUB—and several neighboring communities, including Kendall Square and Central Square. MIT is leading many of the innovation-based activities, and we hope you’ll participate in one or many of them. There are over 170 events to choose from. Here are just a few:

  • The Engine Open House, Tuesday, October 10: Don’t miss this first public showing! Tour the space, hear from the Engine team, and learn how they’re fueling the next generation of world-changing scientific and technological breakthroughs.
  • Kendall Square: Innovation Playground, Wednesday, October 11: A full day of fun and expressive activities—including drone racing, digital graffiti, Lego art, augmented reality, and more—followed by a groundbreaking and reception for the new Kendall graduate student residence hall beginning at 5 pm. A street-long mural created by the youth at the Community Art Center will also be unveiled on Main Street.
  • MIT—For a Better World Shipping Container, Thursday through Sunday: Visit the HUB and stop by MIT’s 40-foot container highlighting student creativity and innovation.
  • MIT Inclusive Innovation Competition (IIC) Awards Ceremony, Thursday, October 12: Keynote Eric Schmidt of Alphabet Inc. will award $1M to organizations that are using technology to benefit the many and not the few.
  • Demo Day, Saturday, October 14: Learn about over 100 of greater Boston’s startups from founders, entrepreneurs, and innovation leaders.
  • Robotic Block Party, Sunday, October 15: The latest in robotics will be showcased in exciting demos of products to come, highlighting the Massachusetts robotics ecosystem.

We are grateful to members of the MIT community who are providing expertise, sharing research, and showcasing the Institute’s spirit of innovation for a better world during HUBweek. We encourage students, faculty, staff, and families alike to explore and participate—register for your HUB Pass today! You can read more on MIT News or visit HUBweek for details.
