Dear colleagues,

I write to remind you of the Faculty Concierge site. Designed, developed, and curated by Donna Behmer, Assistant Provost for Faculty Programs, it conveys information about faculty resources in an accessible manner, including professional development programs tailored to each career stage; resources on DEI, teaching, research, and funding; and one of our newest additions, post-tenure career transition options.

Post-Tenure Career Transition

Many faculty desire flexible arrangements to continue to engage with MIT as they transition toward retirement. At the Post-Tenure Career Transition site, you will find more about options available to you, testimonials from other MIT faculty about their experiences, and resources related to different career stages.

What are my options?

Your options for your transition to retirement range from a gradual phasing-down over a few years at the rank of professor or immediate transition to professor post-tenure, professor emerita, or professor emeritus status. Different arrangements may be discussed with your department head. These include part-time teaching and research, a summer-only research role, or another arrangement that includes no formal teaching or research responsibilities with continued scholarly engagement at MIT. Benefits information and other considerations are summarized by the career stages listed below, and answers to frequently asked questions are provided.

One-on-one consultation is also available to you. MIT's faculty retirement plan specialist Dionne Garcia will be happy to meet with you, and several post-tenure faculty have offered to share their own experiences with you and to answer questions (Guidance & Counseling).
