Dear colleagues,

I write to provide you with details on Executive Vice Provost Paula Hammond’s expanded portfolio of responsibilities within the Provost’s Office. Paula’s appointment as executive vice provost, announced by President Kornbluth on June 16, began on July 1.

In addition to her current portfolio of work, Paula will now assume important responsibilities in supporting the Institute’s research and academic enterprise, its international activities, as well as some of MIT’s strategic innovation priorities. These new roles will supplement her ongoing efforts to foster faculty development and cultivate community; support the recruitment and retention of faculty; and address faculty affairs. Specifically, she will oversee MIT Libraries, MIT Press, MIT Technology Review, and Solve.

Paula has also agreed to serve as the Provost’s Office representative on several boards and committees, spanning areas from open learning to national security. She will represent the Provost’s Office on the Axim Collaborative Board of Trustees (co-chair), the Broad Institute Collaboration Coordinating Committee, and the MIT Lincoln Laboratory Advisory Board. Paula will also serve as a director of the MIT International (MITI) Board, which supports and facilitates the Institute’s international activities. In addition, Paula will help to advance some of the Institute-wide initiatives launched via the Office of Innovation and Strategy, which resides within the Provost’s Office.

Finally, following Philip Khoury’s departure as Vice Provost for the Arts later this month, Paula will provide interim oversight for the Institute’s non-academic arts initiatives and programs – including the List Visual Arts Center, the MIT Museum, the Center for Art, Science and Technology (CAST), and the Council for the Arts at MIT (CAMIT) – until Philip’s successor is appointed.

With appreciation

I look forward to working with Paula and am grateful for her willingness to take on these substantial new responsibilities and for her extraordinary dedication to the MIT community and its mission. I hope you will join me in thanking her for her service.

Sincerely,

Anantha Chandrakasan
Provost
