Special Holiday Closing on July 2, 2021

Dear Colleagues,

On a chilly gray day after a hard gray year, we write with a bright glimpse of summer.

Despite intense personal and professional difficulties, since the start of the pandemic all of you have gone to extraordinary lengths to support the Institute’s mission, our students and each other.

As a mark of our gratitude, the Institute will observe a Special Holiday Closing for faculty and staff on Friday, July 2, 2021. Combined with the regularly scheduled holiday closing on Monday, July 5, 2021, for most employees this extra day will turn the Independence Day holiday into a four-day weekend.

As you know, MIT is a 24/7 community, and some areas and operations need continuous staffing, whether remotely or on-site. Hourly staff who work on July 2 will receive payment under MIT’s special holiday pay rules. Human Resources will follow up with administrators and managers through an email on pay policies, including how to report time for this closing.

We hope this long weekend in July will provide relaxation, inspiration, fun, rest, jubilant fireworks, plenty of time with family and friends, or quiet hours in nature – whatever you need most.

With gratitude and admiration,

L. Rafael Reif, President
