Dear Lecturers and Technical Instructors,

I write to share the final report of the Task Force 2021 Refinement and Implementation Committee on Career Support for Lecturers and Technical Instructors (RIC 7).

The report has benefited from the feedback many of you shared with committee co-chairs Lily Tsai and Bolek Wyslouch when they distributed draft recommendations for comment earlier this academic year. In the time since, the recommendations for establishing a more granular career ladder, systemizing promotion and annual review processes, clarifying non-reappointment policies, and enhancing central support and communications channels have been shared with my leadership team, including the school and college deans and their administration and finance teams.

Next steps

Other efforts in keeping with the recommendations’ larger objectives are already underway in many units, including Executive Vice Provost Paula Hammond’s plans to support a lecturer career development and review training module for department heads and the new system of minimum salaries for lecturers instituted by the School of Humanities, Arts, and Social Sciences. School and college leadership will continue to evaluate the implementation of other recommendations relevant to their areas.

With appreciation

Please join me in thanking Lily, Bolek, and the entire committee, whose names I have listed below, for the care, attention, and thoughtfulness they brought to this vital work.

The report underscores what I see each and every day at MIT: Lecturers and technical instructors are critical to carrying out the Institute’s educational mission. You are valued members of our community, and I look forward to finding ways to advance the roadmap we now have for furthering career opportunities for all of you.

Sincerely,

Anantha P. Chandrakasan
Provost
