December 19, 2023
Cynthia Barnhart, Provost |

Dear colleagues,

I write to let you know that Professor Gene Fitzgerald will step down as director and chief executive officer (CEO) of the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART) at the end of his term in December 2024. A search for his successor will begin shortly.

SMART is MIT’s research enterprise in Singapore, established in partnership with the National Research Foundation of Singapore (NRF). Founded in 2007, SMART has enabled MIT faculty to take on complex, large-scale advanced research projects in collaboration with colleagues based at Singapore institutions.

We are grateful to Gene for his service and leadership, and we will have ample opportunity to celebrate and thank him for his many contributions closer to the end of his term.

Search for successor

The SMART Director and CEO is responsible for the strategic and intellectual direction of SMART as well as oversight and active management of SMART’s large-scale integrated research programs and Innovation Center. The director provides leadership across all of SMART’s activities and cultivates networks of collaboration within MIT, Singapore, and the region. The position is primarily based in Singapore. The director reports to the provost and the SMART Governing Board.

We are forming a faculty search advisory group that will share their insights on the selection of the next leader of SMART. Bruce Tidor, deputy vice provost for international activities and professor of Biological Engineering and Computer Science, will lead the group.

If you would like to be considered for the SMART Director and CEO position, please write to smartdirsearch@mit.edu to submit your CV and a statement of interest. You can also use this address to nominate a colleague for the role or to share your thoughts about the search. Your submissions will be treated as confidential.

Sincerely,

Cindy
