Plans for TSR^2 and Tutoring Resources across MIT
Dear Colleagues,
We are writing to let you know that TSR^2 (The Talented Scholars Resource Room) in 16-159 will become the foundation of a broader campus effort to make tutoring more available for all undergraduates.
This exciting transition and expansion, led by John Sandoval, Associate Dean for Advising & Academic Achievement, is a major priority for the Undergraduate Advising Center (UAC) and coincides with the creation of the Office of Academic Community, Empowerment, and Success (OACES).
While TSR^2 will continue to provide tutoring for the GIRs, we see a great opportunity to streamline tutoring services and resources across MIT by working closely with academic departments, subject leads, and other campus partners to create a shared learning environment. This model will increase accessibility for students, extend hours of operation, and better connect existing tutoring efforts across the Institute.
On September 16th, TSR^2 will officially open with a small open house for the MIT community from 4–5pm at 16-159. Noted in the OACES announcement, Building 16 will serve as a temporary home; in the coming months TSR^2 will move to the space OME once occupied in Building 4-107 (on the Infinite).
With expanded space and proximity to the new UAC space in Building 11, this future location will enable us to quickly enhance services and deepen our collaborations to better meet student needs.
We invite you to join us in this effort by:
- exploring opportunities for your department's tutoring program to collaborate with TSR^2, including using the expanded space to hold tutoring sessions;
- considering ways to align existing tutoring resources to maximize accessibility and impact for students; and
- sharing feedback and ideas on how we can make the space as supportive and useful as possible for your students and instructors.
If you are interested in discussing opportunities to partner with the UAC on tutoring, please reach out to John.
We look forward to collaborating with you and your colleagues to bring this vision to life.
Sincerely,
Dave, Diep, and John
