Dear Colleagues,

I am pleased to announce an enhancement of the current Paid Parental Leave benefit (as found in Policies & Procedures Section 7.5.6.1 and the Personnel Policy Manual Section 4.6). This enhanced benefit has been approved by MIT’s Employee Benefits Oversight Committee (EBOC).

Effective July 1, 2018, MIT will provide up to 20 days of Paid Parental Leave to eligible new parents, including birth mothers, spouses, domestic partners, and parents through surrogacy, adoption or foster placement. The leave may be taken within 6 months following the birth of a baby, or adoption or placement of a child under 18. This enhanced Paid Parental Leave is available to non-faculty benefits-eligible staff – Support, Administrative, Sponsored Research Staff, Other Academic, and Medical employees – after 1 year of benefits-eligible service; service staff should review their collective bargaining agreements regarding all leave benefits. Details on the application of this policy to postdoctoral associates and fellows may be found here. Note that separate policies apply to faculty (see Policies & Procedures Section 7.5.2 and Section 7.5.3).

We are delighted to have this opportunity to further expand MIT’s benefits to new parents in our community. For a comprehensive outline of this and other new parent benefits for MIT employees, including resources and services, visit the Parental Leave section of the HR website.

If you have any questions about the Paid Parental Leave benefit, please contact your local Human Resources Administrator, the Human Resources Officer assigned to your department/lab/center, or Human Resources Disabilities Services and Medical Leaves office.

Sincerely,

Lorraine A. Goffe
Vice President for Human Resources
