Nominations now open for the MIT Staff Award for Distinction in Service and the Gordon Y. Billard Award

To the members of the MIT community,

MIT employees are essential to the Institute’s sustained excellence in academics and research. In ways large and small, at both the Institute and unit level, they share their professional expertise, create vital connections, and actively enhance our community.

We invite you to consider those individuals who go above and beyond to support the mission of the Institute and to recognize them with a nomination for one of the following awards:

The MIT Staff Award for Distinction in Service is given to a staff member whose service to MIT results in a positive, lasting impact across the Institute. It honors individuals who are dedicated to upholding MIT's core values and to building community, partnerships, and connections. Award recipients embody the personal qualities of kindness, humility, and strength of character, and are deeply committed to both the work and the people of MIT.

The Gordon Y. Billard Award is given to a staff member, faculty member, or MIT-affiliated individual who has provided “special service of outstanding merit performed for the Institute.” Nominees for the Gordon Y. Billard Award must have made sustained contributions to the Institute for at least 10 years. The award acknowledges individuals who have made an impact beyond normal job duties and made important, lasting, and wide-ranging contributions to the MIT community.

Nominations are due by Friday, March 20, and can be submitted using the links above. The Gordon Y. Billard Award and the MIT Staff Award for Distinction in Service will be presented at the 2026 Excellence Awards and Collier Medal ceremony in June.
