Dear colleagues,

During the summer of 2020, the Institute announced several steps it would take to address the legacy of racism, including making a $1 million commitment to fund antiracist research at MIT. With the goal of seeding new research, amplifying existing research, creating links between related efforts across the Institute, and establishing connections with other institutions, we are pleased to announce seven awards made in the fund’s inaugural year. You can read about the winning projects here.

The committee charged with reviewing the fund submissions sought ambitious proposals that marshal the best efforts of MITʼs diverse and multi-disciplinary community to think creatively about this deep-rooted problem. The awardees represent schools and departments from across the Institute.

We close by expressing appreciation to all the members of the review committee for the time and expertise they lent to this effort.

Sincerely,

Nergis Mavalvala
