Mind and Hand Book
Dear Students,
The new academic year is almost here, and I am writing to share with you some important information that you will need to know before you arrive back on campus.
Being a member of the MIT community comes with certain privileges and responsibilities. Whether you are a returning student or are preparing for your first year, MIT expects all students to know and follow Institute policies to ensure that our campus is safe, welcoming, and supportive for all community members.
Many of those responsibilities are communicated to every student through the The Mind and Hand Book. This important resource is available online or in print from the Office of Student Citizenship (W20-507). This past year a committee of faculty, staff, and student representatives from the Undergraduate Association and Graduate Student Council reviewed and updated several policies, including the help-seeking protocol for responding to alcohol and drug-related medical emergencies and the hazing policy.
Students should also be familiar with state and federal laws that apply to student life at MIT, as well as related Institute policies. These include the following:
- Massachusetts state law on hazing, MIT policy on hazing and MIT's hazing prevention website.
- Federal Title IX law, MIT's sexual misconduct policy, and further MIT resources and information on sexual misconduct
- Federal Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act and MIT policy on alcohol and drug use
- Federal Clery Act (see MIT's Annual Security and Fire Safety Report)
As your summer winds down please take a few minutes to carefully read the Mind and Hand Book and the state and federal laws listed above. If you have any questions please contact the Office of Student Citizenship at (617) 253-3276.
To both new and returning students, I offer my very best wishes for a wonderful year ahead.
Sincerely,
Chris Colombo
Dean for Student Life
