Dan Hastings appointed interim ICEO & interim associate provost
Dear members of the MIT community,
When we wrote with the news that Institute Community and Equity Officer (ICEO) John Dozier will leave MIT on June 30, we noted that searches at that level can take time.
Two interim roles
We are therefore delighted to let you know that, upon John’s departure, Dan Hastings SM '78, PhD '80, Cecil and Ida Green Education Professor of Aeronautics and Astronautics, will step in as interim ICEO until John’s permanent successor is on board. Since 2019, Dan has led AeroAstro as department head; in 2021, he was appointed to a school-wide role as associate dean of engineering for diversity, equity, and inclusion. The School of Engineering is launching a search for Dan’s successor as department head and will also appoint a new associate dean.
In addition, Dan will take on closely related work as interim associate provost for faculty advancement, a position that will be devoted to many aspects of professional development, community, and climate for faculty. We will announce in the near future an internal search to fill this faculty post.
About Dan Hastings
Dan brings to these interim roles a remarkable depth and breadth of professional accomplishment and service to the Institute community, as well as an impressive record of national service. As one mark of his professional leadership, Dan was recently named president-elect of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics. Among his recent accomplishments at MIT, he led AeroAstro through the countless challenges of the Covid years. For much of that time, he also co-chaired the MIT Values Statement Committee, which led the extensive community-wide process that resulted in the statement of MIT Values now celebrated so colorfully by the Lobby 7 banners. We are very grateful to Dan for his continued service in these bridging roles.
The ICEO search
As we plan for John’s departure as ICEO, we have begun a national search, to be informed by input from the community. For now, if you have ideas or insights about the role or candidates to propose, you may submit them to us confidentially at iceo-search@mit.edu.
Sincerely,
Sally Kornbluth
