Campus internet outage this morning

March 21, 2023
Mark V. Silis, Vice President for Information Systems and Technology |

To the members of the MIT community,

We are aware that many of you on campus experienced issues connecting to the internet this morning. The issue is now resolved, and connection to the internet has been restored.

During the outage, which lasted from approximately 10:40 to 11:20 a.m., members of the MIT community on campus were unable to connect to external platforms and services, including Zoom, Dropbox, Google, and Amazon. Our Information Systems and Technology (IS&T) teams have determined that the outage was due to a configuration issue with MIT's external internet providers. We understand that internet outages are extremely frustrating and disruptive to the important work of our community. To help protect us against issues like this in the future, we are continuing to examine the issue and working to put additional safeguards in place.

If you continue to experience issues connecting to the internet, please contact the IS&T Service Desk at servicedesk@mit.edu or 617-253-1101.

MIT’s 3Down website provides regular updates on the status of IT systems and services across the Institute. Please visit the site for the most up-to-date information on this issue and to sign up for automatic notifications.

Sincerely,

Mark Silis
Vice President for Information Systems and Technology
