About the Position

As the president’s senior advisor on all matters related to MIT’s engagement with federal, state and local government, the vice president for government affairs is responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive strategic plan for government relations to advance the Institute’s educational and policy interests at the federal, state, city, and community levels.

While leading the MIT Washington, DC Office, the vice president for government affairs will work with the president and senior team to develop an overall Washington, DC strategy that supports MIT’s mission, values, fiscal health, and autonomy, taking into account MIT’s lobbying efforts, communications work, legal strategies, and oversight of Lincoln Laboratory.

In addition, this position will advise the president and other members of MIT’s leadership team on legislative and regulatory issues involving the federal government in areas such as research and education policy, immigration, federal funding, research security, the impact of regulation on campus life, and strategic opportunities to enhance the institution’s public impact and global outreach.

The vice president for government affairs will oversee the Office of Government and Community Relations in efforts to support the local economy and ensure MIT’s involvement in regional or state-based initiatives or programs.

Importantly, the vice president will advocate for sound policies and practices in education, research and innovation, and for maintaining MIT’s position as a global leader in science and technology.
