About the position
The vice provost for faculty plays a crucial role in supporting MIT’s faculty in creative and forward-looking ways.
Key areas of responsibility include:
- Strengthening faculty success across all career stages: Lead and coordinate Institute-wide approaches to hiring, mentoring, tenure and promotion, reappointment and review, and recruitment and retention—ensuring clarity, fairness, and alignment with MIT’s academic priorities.
- Advancing faculty development and leadership: Design and implement programs that strengthen research, teaching, mentoring, and leadership capabilities—preparing faculty to take on consequential roles across MIT.
- Supporting a healthy and constructive academic environment: Work with departments and faculty to strengthen community and culture, serve as a confidential resource for complex situations, and develop constructive pathways for resolution and renewal.
- Partnering on Institute-level strategy: Advise the provost and collaborate with academic leaders on strategic planning, departmental support, and the institutional infrastructure faculty need to pursue ambitious work.
- Oversight of select programs and board representation: Represent the Provost’s Office on key committees and co-chair designated boards that advance the Institute’s academic mission.
- Space management: The vice provost will also have oversight and planning responsibilities for campus academic and research spaces, including space allocation and assignment decisions.
