To our first-years, sophomores, and juniors,

Commencement week is a time when we celebrate an important academic and research milestone for our graduates. While these festivities recognize their hard work and achievement, it is also a moment to recognize the steadfast support of the entire community in helping them to reach their goals – and you can be a part of it by volunteering to work at the Commencement week events.

MIT Commencement encompasses multiple ceremonies across several days (schedule), including:

  • the OneMIT Commencement Ceremony for all graduates and their guests in Killian Court;
  • the Undergraduate Degree Ceremony at Briggs Field;
  • the School/College Advanced Degree Ceremonies, comprising doctoral hooding; and
  • this year only, a special ceremony in Killian Court for the Classes of 2020 and 2021, who did not have their own in-person Commencement events.

We are fortunate every year to find current MIT students to help make celebrating Commencement a memorable experience. Among the roles needed are those related to guest services, which includes ushering, translation, campus information, disability services, and generally ensuring that our graduates and their families enjoy these special days.

If you would like to participate in staffing the Commencement events this year, please indicate your interest and general hours of availability on May 26, 27, and 28 through this online form. In addition, current on-campus undergraduate residents who complete the Commencement-related commitments may request to continue living on campus until 12 noon on Sunday, May 29. The deadline to request extended housing through the Commencement sign-up form is Sunday, May 1, 2022.

This year’s multiple ceremonies mean that your support will be more vital to the success of MIT Commencement than ever before. We hope that many of you will join in celebrating Commencement – in person, on campus – by helping to staff the ceremonies. If you have specific questions about how volunteering works, please contact MIT Institute Events.

Sincerely,

Melissa Nobles
