Dear Colleagues,

As we approach the one-year anniversary of the MIT Staff Emergency Hardship Fund, it is encouraging to hear how the Hardship Fund grants – funded solely by generous donations from the MIT community – have provided relief to our staff and postdoctoral scholars in financial distress due to the pandemic or other serious emergencies. These grants have helped many individuals pay for their mortgages or rent, utilities, groceries, medical bills, and other essential expenses.

Over a year into the pandemic, we have more information about the types of financial emergencies that staff and postdoctoral scholars are facing – from spouse/partner layoffs, furloughs, or reduced pay, to new or significantly increased essential expenses. For some individuals and families, it is difficult to make ends meet.

With this data, the decision has been made to increase the maximum Hardship Fund grant amount to $1,500, effective April 1, 2021. Previous recipients may re-apply to the Hardship Fund, but the total amount granted will not exceed $1,500. For example, if an individual received a $1,000 grant previously, they may only re-apply for up to $500. Those who re-apply must provide detailed information about their current financial hardship, as well as provide supporting documentation.

If you have any questions, please reach out to the Center for WorkLife and WellBeing at worklife@mit.edu or 617-253-1592.

Sincerely,

Ramona Allen, Vice President for Human Resources
