To the members of the MIT community,

Earlier this evening, as you may have learned through the MIT Alert system, there was a shooting near our campus. We have learned from the Cambridge Police Department that the shooting is believed to have occurred in the vicinity of 119 Windsor Street.

According to the authorities, the victim was struck by gunshots in a vehicle that was departing Newtowne Court. The car was driven to Main Street in Kendall Square, across the street from the Marriott Hotel. The victim was pronounced deceased after he was transported to a local hospital. The victim's identification will be released once next of kin are notified.

The Cambridge Police and the Middlesex County District Attorney's Office are leading an investigation of the shooting, and the MIT Police are offering assistance.

While the MIT Police have informed me that there is no known danger to the MIT community, they caution us all to be especially alert.
