To the members of the MIT community:

In April, President Reif wrote to share our decision to create the new position of Institute Community and Equity Officer. After extensive consultation across MIT, today I am delighted to announce that Professor Ed Bertschinger has agreed to take on this important new role. The News Office story describes our vision for this position. It also highlights Ed's exceptionally effective efforts, within his department and well beyond it, to make the MIT community more diverse, more welcoming and more inclusive.

Ed brings to this role a striking personal perspective; more than 25 years of teaching and mentoring MIT students; the persistence and drive of a first-class scientist; and an unwavering conviction that on matters of equity, fairness and inclusion, MIT should lead.

I am deeply grateful to Ed for taking on this vital responsibility, and I look forward to working with him to help MIT fulfill its deepest values and highest ideals.

Sincerely,

Chris Kaiser
Provost
